7 Essential Holiday Shopping Tips
Halloween may be over, but we’ve got a few tricks to help you have fun and avoid going deep into debt with your holiday shopping this year.
Create a Holiday Spending Budget
Decide how much you can comfortably spend this holiday season – including in your budget incidentals such as wrapping paper, cards, decorations, entertainment and travel.
Make a List… And Check It Twice.
The simplest way to plan for holiday gift giving (and spending) is to write down a list of the people you need to buy for, how much you are willing and able to spend on each person, and which stores you’ll visit. This will help to focus your shopping excursion, and can even help you become more efficient – you’ll avoid rushing aimlessly from store to store, snapping up random holiday bargains. Plus, having a game plan will allow you to keep track your gift-buying progress, creating a sense of accomplishment.
Start Early
Avoid feeling frazzled (and a slim selection of gifts) by starting your gift purchasing before the rush; this can mean being super keen and nabbing Boxing Day sales for the following year or just avoiding malls on Christmas Eve. With your list in hand, start stashing away gifts for people weeks, if not months ahead of time – you (and your budget) will feel better for it!
Pay with Cash
Stay out of the red and hang on to more green this season by paying with cash. Go to the bank and ask for $100 bills – you’re lest likely to buy impulsively if it means breaking a C-note. Or if you’d rather use plastic, use a debit card on an account without an overdraft – when you’re out of money, you can’t spend anymore.
Stay On Top of Credit Card Spending
Sometimes spending with credit is unavoidable. As soon as you come home from a day of shopping – or as soon as you finalize online purchases – immediately transfer what you’ve spent on credit cards from your checking account online, or subtract the amount from a paper record. This makes you accountable for how much you’ve spent on your credit card and ensures you’ll have the money to pay off the debt when the bill arrives.
Think Outside the (Gift) Box
Avoid the need for returns and consider buying a gift card to a friend or family member’s favorite store, or help your loved one discover a new shop that specializes in his/her hobbies or interests.
Think about giving the gift of experiences: buying concert or sports tickets, or an evening out at a restaurant are excellent gifts for those hard-to-buy-for people who don’t need or want anymore “stuff.” And these event-oriented gifts are extra special if you can share in the experience and make memories as you enjoy spending time together.
Take a Shopping Break
If the idea of spending an entire day shopping makes you cringe, add in a little festive cheer by scheduling lunch or coffee with a friend, a manicure or even a massage. These breaks from the holiday crowds will help you come up for air and give you time to delight in your shopping progress.
